Coming of Age in New Jersey: College and American Culture
Published in Paperback by Rutgers University Press (March, 1989)
Average review score:

An Anthropological Study of University StudentsThe author is a faculty member in the Anthropology department at Rutgers University who decided to do a study of the students in traditional immersion fashion. To do this, he joined the incoming freshman class as an older student returning to school and lived in the dorm. The resulting book is a fascinating read, particularly for someone who was actually entering college around the same time as Moffatt's study. Moffatt covers the group dynamics, the forming and shifting of groups, and many of the aspects of college life.
I couldn't put it down! One of the few college texts I actually READ. Required for a freshman anthropology class (this is almost 8 years ago now), I was thrilled by every word in this book... Easy to read, interesting, entertaining... I mistakenly loaned it to someone who never gave it back and have regretted it ever since. A must read for anyone interested in a look at college culture through the eyes of someone doing it again, 20 years after graduation.

A Gem of a BookOne of a fantastic series of 4 chuck full of informational volumes dedicated to a particular geographic area. A must for any rock hound weather you travel or just live in the geographic area of the volume. If you can afford it, get all 4 regional volumes. Start with your area. The location information brake down of the minerals to be found in each state counties is so valuable you can't do with out it. Saves time, eliminate barren hunting grounds and it's so detailed as to where and how you find the minerals. This is just one of a fact full accurate guide series you'll want to have in your rock library. Don't settle for an older printing, this one is reprinted and has been updated.
Love it, love it, love it!This book looks like it's going to be a GREAT asset in my mineral hunting! I like the way it's set up, by state and then by county within the state. It lists the various sites, tells what has been found at each site and (by a code explained in the front of the book) where in each site the minerals were (in a field, in a mine, in the water, etc.). There are directions of varying degrees to each site. That's the one thing I'd quibble about -- some of the directions aren't that precise. But I understand that some of these sites are private lands, or not completely documented, and he can't come out and say, "Go fifty feet past the blue house, down a ravine, and to your left." In general, the directions seem good enough to get you close, and after that it's up to you.
He lists the rocks and minerals found at each site and gives some information about the quality at most places, including size of crystals found, color (and quality of color), and so on.
My only regret? I don't know if I'll have time to visit each site he has listed! So many rocks, so little time........

Fresh Jersey: Stories from an Altered State
Published in Paperback by Camino Books (October, 2000)
Average review score:

A Jersey GemMike Kelly is the Jimmy Breslin of New Jersey, a writer with a deft touch who can portray the human side of issues, politics, and other areas where people become statistics or political rallying points. This is a wonderful collection of pieces displaying Kelly's empathetic touch. New Jersey receives a ton of bad press, but Kelly manages to portray the diversity, humor and underlying heart and toughness of the state in a way which blows the stereotypes out of the water. Highly recommended.
Took me HomeI left Jersey twenty-five years ago, but the characters and places in Fresh Jersey brought it all warmly to life for me. There's a world view from the ground in NJ that becomes more clear after living on the other coast, and it springs to life in these pages. My personal favorite column was about the shad fisherman in the Hudson River. This is great stuff to give someone in the other 49 states who hails from NJ. Mine's going to another Jersey ex-pat.

The Indians of New Jersey: Dickon Among the Lenapes
Published in Paperback by Rutgers University Press (December, 1963)
Average review score:

An excellent fictional account of the Lenape people.By labeling this book as merely juvenile fiction, you have committed an error. Yes, this book could be enjoyed by a fifth grader, but its enormous wealth of details, its presentation of sophisticated concepts, and its intricate descriptions of such events as religious ceremonies, put this book within the adult reading level. There are even Lenape words sprinkled throughout the book and a tiny Lenape/English phrase dictionary at the back of the book. This novel is a fictional account of an English boy's rescue from drowning by a Lenape family. It details his life and the lives of those around him as he learns about and adapts to the ways of the Lenape people. He is eventually adopted into the family of his best friend. Along the way the reader is guided into every facet of Lenape life, down to the tiniest detail as to how leather was tanned and crops were grown, to the grandest concepts involving myth, legend, and the Sacred. This is not only a story about the Lenape people in particular, it is an excellent source of information for anyone wishing to know how the human race flourished before the advance of technology. Note: This review is based on the 1966 copyright version of the book by M.R. Harrington with an introduction by Mary V. Gaver.
Excellent, reading level 3rd to 5 th gradeExcellent book, drawings, dictionary. Reading level 3rd to 5th grade. (Not preschool - 1st)!

Jersey Diners
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (January, 2003)
Average review score:

It Brings back old memories! This book was a sheer joy to find on the book shelf when I bought it for a friend for Christmas. I couldn't help but spend time reading it myself since I'm such a diner fanatic, and being in New Jersey, how couldn't you be? I read the book through and through, loving the photographs such as Rosie's and the Felix #9 diner in Bridgewater. I remember squealing with joy realizing that the good old Bound Brook Diner appeared on the front cover. Lunch there for 10 years is the best thing. I enjoyed reading the small accounts of "diner life" by other New Jersey citizens and I plesantly smiled to myself. I never would think anyone could ever capture the essence of the New Jersey Diner, but Genovese did. Can I have a Felix #9 sandwich please with pork roll now?
Genovese book is a MUST for diner fans, and fun for all!Peter Genovese has written an informative and enjoyable account of the life of that great American institution, the diner. Concentrating on his native New Jersey, one of the leading diner states, Genovese takes the reader on a mouth watering tour. In addition, this book helped me to discover the diner subculture that is alive and well in the U.S. today. I would love to see Genovese turn his descriptive talents loose on the rest of the Northeast - perhaps a companion book for each great diner state

Lonely Planet New York, New Jersey and Pennsyvania (Serial)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (June, 1997)
Average review score:

A fantastic guide -- tourists and locals alike will enjoy. What a wonderful tool this little book is. This LP guide to the midatlantic states provides information that both a foreign tourist coming to the area for the first time and a local searching for a new experience will find useful. In addition to being chock full of information the text is illuminating and humorous reading as well.
Brilliant & helpfulOf all the guidebooks I've read, I've found this guide to be the most helpful, well setout, motivating book yet. I've been in New York for 1 month now and I have found the book invaluable. I especially like the sections on transport. It offers choices not just a statement of what you need to do. Also, the way the attractions are all logically set out by areas is helpful in trying to plan your days and getting the most out of them. I will be in New york for the next 11 months and I'm sure I will continue to use my 'bible of New York' till I leave. Well done Lonely planet
